Some photos from our trip to Bosawas Nature reserve in Nicaragua (December 2021).
The purpose of the trip was primarily to visit the Mayangna village of Arang Dak on the Walak Was (Lakus River). Anthropologist Jeremy Koster has been visiting Arang Dak for many years, working with the Mayangna documenting their life. It is the most remote village in the reserve, and to get there was two days in a boat from Wiwili, down the Coco River and then up the Walak Was. On the way, we also detoured up the Bocay River to stay for a couple of days in Amak, another Mayangna village.
I’m working on a photo essay about the problems the Mayangna are facing with settler/colonist invasion, primarily focused on Arang Dak and the Walak Was. It’s a big an escalating problem faced by the Mayangna and has over the last years led to violence and murders of Mayanga villagers. The problem is now starting to come o the Walak Was, and the Mayanga of Arang Dak are trying to confront the problem early and chart a different path that doesn’t escalate to violence.
I have LOTS of photos from the Walak Was and Arang Dak and will feature those in the article i am working on. However, i had some nice shots of the way there and back which otherwise might just get buried on my hard drive, so i thought to do a post with them…
